Pink colored fish flakes called sakura denbu adds color to your rice bowls, sushi rolls, and bento boxes.

Sakura Denbu

Sakura Denbu (桜田麩) is a pink seasoned codfish condiment. Sakura (桜) means cherry blossom, and Denbu (田麩) refers to white fish flakes that are boiled, dehydrated, seasoned, and tinted with red food coloring. It’s a type of tsukudani (佃煮), a rice accompaniment featuring seafood or vegetables simmered and cooked in a sweet-savoy soy sauce-based sauce.

What Is Sakura Denbu

Sakura denbu is finely shredded dried fish flakes, usually cod or sea bream. It is colored pink like cherry blossoms and is sprinkled over rice bowls or rolled in futomaki. It’ll add a spring touch to any dish.

What Does It Taste Like

It’s slightly sweet and salty, and the texture is fluffy like meat floss.
